パベル・シュミッドはチェコのパルドゥビッチェに生まれた。
世界を震撼させた「プラハの春」事件の時は１６歳だった。
多くのチェコ市民は其の時から人生観が変わったと語っている。
東欧の各地域は長い間、常に列強の脅威におびえていた。

１９９０年やっと冷戦の終結と共に
それぞれの国として独立し、自由を得た。

パベル・シュミッドはその後写真の道を究め、
チェコに残された数々の文化遺産を写真に収め、
本人が出版する「The Heart in Europe」を編纂している。
　彼は活動的に各国を取材するかたわら、
常に少年時代の記憶をたどり、
素朴で人間性豊かな人たちと出会う事の喜びが、
いつしか等身大のまなざしがフィルムに像を結んだ。

　今回、ストライプハウスギャラリー「Carpathian Ruthenia」と
コダックフォトサロン「one World one Story」の展覧会にて
パベル・シュミッドのヒューマンドキュメントを見る機会を得て、
いま、なお存在する世界の列強国の狭間で
おびえ生きなければならない人々と、
伝えられている各国の歴史との矛盾を想像することが、
戦争とは何か、誰が平和を望んでいるのか、
が分かると思う。

“Carpathian Ruthenia　-Where Used To Be Czechoslovakia-”
Since 1918 till 1938 Carpathian Ruthenia was a part of the then Czechoslovakia. It could be said that those 20 years were the most fortunate period in modern history of the area. The schools and the office buildings were built, the region flourished, while the Czech language entered the Carpathian Ruthenia. The events of the World War II and the following course of history has brought the Carpathian Ruthenia under the Soviet rule.

In 1998 I went to see the places where Czech was spoken 50 years ago. I discovered that time stood still here. This was a landscape of my own childhood. What is more - life in the little Ricka village somehow symbolized a life of the Ruthenians in the entire area: a space where hospitality and friendship mix with memories and nostalgia of "the Old Times". Even though it was my first visit to Carpathian Ruthenia, I felt as if I were coming back to a familiar place. I experienced a strange kind of homesickness. A homecoming.

「カルパチア・ルテニアへの旅」
　1918年から1938年まで、《カルパチア・ルテニア》はチェコスロヴァキアの一部だった。この地方にとって、この20年間は、近代でもっとも幸せな時代だったと言えるだろう。チェコ語が導入され、学校や公共施設がつぎつぎと建設され、地域は繁栄した。しかし第二次世界大戦が始まり、終わり、カルパチア・ルテニアはハンガリーに返還され、ついでソヴィエト連邦の支配下に入る。
　1998年、わたしは、半世紀前にチェコ語が話されていた土地を見に出かけた。行ってみると、そこは時間が停止したような場所だった。そこには、わたしの子供時代を想起させる風景が広がっていた。のみならず、この地方全体のルテニア人、つまりウクライナ人の生活を象徴しているような、Rickaという小さな村の暮らしの中に、わたしは、もてなし好きな人々の優しさ、友情、そして《古き良き時代》に対するノスタルジーと記憶とが、醸成する独特な空間を見た。初めて来た土地であるにもかかわらず、わたしは自分のふるさとに帰ったような気がした。不思議なホームシックのようなものすら感じ、それは一種の 《帰郷》だった。
